Manish Giletwala, Gujarat Congress MLA from Surat, who has come out in open in his support to Chief Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday resigned from the party.

"I have sent my resignation to Gujarat Congress president Bharat Solanki by post. I will also resign as MLA soon," Giletwala said.

Asked about the reason behind his action, Giletwala said he was served a show-cause notice by the Congress after publicly siding with Modi and hence did not wish to continue with the Congress.

Asked if he would join the ruling BJP anytime now, he said, "So far, I have no such plan." Giletwala had on several occasions shown where his loyalties lay after he openly stood by Modi's side in public functions in Surat.

The state unit of Congress warned Giletwala and others like him that they were free to leave the party and that no act of indiscipline would be tolerated.

A similar notice was issued by the Congress to Ummergaon legislator Shankar Varli for his defiant stand against the party.
