Spiritual leader Sri Chinmoy who spread his message of world peace and harmony died in New York City on Thursday. He was 76.

Chinmoy died of a heart attack on Thursday at his home in the Queens borough, the Indian guru's organisation said.

Chinmoy, who performed at concerts sponsored by his centres, had among his followers the British jazz-rock fusion guitarist John McLaughlin.
