An army major was killed during an operation against militants in a forest in north Kashmir on Tuesday. Two soldiers, including an officer, were also injured.

A defence spokesman said the incident happened when 34 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) initiated a jungle operation in Rangwar near the famous health resort of Tangmarg.

"Militants opened fire at search parties, resulting in the death of a major," Lt. Col A.K.Mathur said. He added that an operation was still going on.

PTI adds:

Two Lashkar-e-Toiba suspects were arrested and three hideouts busted in Jammu, Poonch and Doda districts, official sources said. The recoveries from the hide-out included two charger shells, four rounds of ammunition, seven rounds of SLR, one country-made rifle, one binocular and one pouch.
