The three major political parties in Karnataka have welcomed the central government's decision to seek the dissolution of the Karnataka assembly.

Bharatiya Janata Party state unit president D V Sadananda Gowda termed it an appropriate decision, noting that no party was in a position to form the government on its own or by joining hands with another.

"In this background, an elected government with a fresh mandate from the people is the answer," he said.

"The BJP wants early elections to the assembly," he said.

The BJP government collapsed on Monday after its coalition partner JD-S decided to vote against the B S Yeddyurappa government.

JD-S spokesperson Y S V Datta said: "We welcome it. We are prepared for elections. Our party president H D Deve Gowda had written a letter on October 24 itself (seeking the dissolution of the assembly). We were mentally prepared for elections long back."

The Congress also said the step was a good step to end uncertainty in the state.

Amid speculation that JD-S leader Deve Gowda has sent feelers to the Congress, senior leader in charge of the state Prithviraj Chavan said the party was not interested in forming a government by engineering defections.

"It is a good decision to end uncertainty in Karnataka. The state deserves a better government. I appeal to the people of Karnataka to elect a stable government," he said.

He said the state unit of the party has already decided against forming a coalition government in the state and "we had been demanding the dissolution of the House for seeking a fresh mandate".

Chavan was also of the view that there will be no sympathy factor in favour of the BJP as it had decided to go with the JD-S despite the humiliation it had to suffer.

"We will highlight that they joined hands with JD-S again just to form the government," he said.
