Suspected militants belonging to the Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel Garlosa) group or the Black Widow ambushed a Central Reserve Police Force convoy killing seven CRPF personnel on the spot in interior North Cachar Hill district of Assam on Friday.
Police in Haflong, the headquarters of the hill district, informed that militants ambushed a three-vehicle convoy of the CRPF escorting the commanding officer of the force's 50th Battalion near Langting under Umrangshu police station.
The militants hiding in forest hurled grenades and opened indiscriminate fire at the convoy.
Two vehicles of the convoy, including the one in which the commanding officer was travelling, were unscathed while the third vehicle came under heavy attack. All seven CRPF men travelling in that vehicle died on the spot.
The convoy was travelling from Haflong to a CRPF camp located in a remote area under Umrangshu police station of the district about 75 km away from the district headquarter town.
Senior police officials of the district including the Superintendent Deepak Kedia rushed to the spot immediately after the news of the tragedy was received in Haflong. The incident occurred at around 10.50 am.
