A terror attack was averted on Sunday with the recovery of a bomb containing 1 kilogram of RDX near the main fish market of Assam's Jorhat district.

The explosive device, hidden in a plastic jar, was tied to an abandoned cycle with the timer set for 8 am. Vendors detected the jar at around 7.30 am, police said.

Police and army officials rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area while the explosive device was taken to a field and defused.

The market, in the heart of the town, is usually crowded on Sunday mornings and a bomb blast there would have caused tremendous damage, police said.

A high-level meeting of civil, police and army officials was held to review security in Jorhat district.

According to intelligence reports, the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom has planned to strike in the area in a big way as Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's constituency Titabor is in the district.
