Controversial Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Mohammed Shahabuddin, lodged in a jail in Siwan, was in for trouble after a surprise raid on Tuesday night by district and prison authorities in his cell resulted in seizure of two mobile phones.

Two other mobile sets and four chargers were recovered from his supporters in the adjoining cell, District Magistrate S K Mall told PTI.

Mall, who led the raid along with Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar, said he was tipped off about Shahabuddin using mobile phones inside the jail.

"This is a major prison offence and we are looking at all legal aspects before a case is lodged against the MP and others found violating jail manuals," he said.

Prison manual empowers district magistrate to order additional imprisonment up to two years to an inmate caught violating it.

Sahabuddin was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court on May 8 in connection with kidnapping and suspected murder of a CPI-ML leader Chote Lala Gupta in 1999.
