TRS MLA remanded to judicial custody

May 11, 2007 16:02 IST

Rebel Telangana Rashtra Samithi legislator S Bapurao was on Friday sent to jail after being remanded to judicial custody for two weeks in connection with the human trafficking scam.

Bapurao, who appeared in the Central Crime Station in Hyderabad on Thursday, was produced in the Nampally criminal court here that sent him to judicial custody till May 25.

Soon after, he was shifted to Chanchalguda jail.

Police here had on May three booked a case against Bapurao, who represents Boath constituency in the backward Adilabad district, on the charge that he had secured passports for others in the name of his family members.

The case was booked based on revelations made by city-based travel agent Rasheed, the alleged kingpin of the racket, during his interrogation.

After his statement was recorded in the Central Crime Station yesterday, Bapurao claimed he was "innocent" and alleged that the case against him was part of a "conspiracy" by TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao.

Bapurao is the second TRS MLA to be sent to jail in the case after K Lingaiah, who is in judicial custody. Rasheed and his accomplice Muzaffar Ali were taken into custody by police for further interrogation.

A local court had on Thursday granted police custody for eight days for Rasheed and two days' custody for Muzaffar.
