A violent clash took place between supporters and rivals of Rashtriya Janata Dal member of Parliament Mohammed Shahabuddin inside Siwan jail on Tuesday afternoon after a special court awarded life imprisonment to him.

Official sources in Siwan jail said that some of the inmates were injured in the violent clash, but the situation was brought to normal.

However, tension continues inside the jail, where Shahabuddin is lodged in a high security cell. "After the violent clash, security was tightened inside the jail in view of the tension," a senior jail official said.

The Siwan district administration also asked jail authorities to keep an eye on rival groups to aviod any clash.

In March 2007, a similar clash took place inside the jail.
