Rajya Sabha adjourned abruptly
May 08, 2007 20:18 IST
The House was adjourned amidst unruly scenes, when the Congress and Left Front members protested that they too be allowed to raise Gujarat issue for which they had given notice after Jaswant Singh had sought to put the Government in the dock charging it with being soft on separatist in Kashmir.
Shekawat refused to relent saying that he would go through the notices and decide the order of listing according to date of submissions and as treasury and leftist members contested this, he adjourned the House for the day.
For the past two days, the tussle between BJP and the ruling alliance on whether the Gujarat or Kashmir issue should get precedence had deadlocked proceedings of the House.
After two adjournments on Tuesday, Shekawat tried to break the impasse by counselling members that they should uphold the tradition of allowing the Leader of the Opposition to make his submission.
To this, the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Pachauri said they had no objection, but said BJP too should allow other parties to raise issues after Singh had made his point.
