In one of the biggest crackdowns on narcotic smuggling in Delhi, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and the Delhi police have seized heroin with a street value of around Rs 62 crore in separate cases.

DRI sleuths seized 40 kg of heroin worth Rs 40 crore in the international market and arrested two persons including a woman on the basis of specific information, thus claiming to have cracked an international gang involved in trafficking of drugs.

The duo was arrested after their vehicle were intercepted on the G T Karnal Road near the Delhi-Haryana border late on Monday night, DRI sources said in Delhi.

Twenty kg of heroin of Afghani origin, concealed in specially made cavities in the vehicle, was seized.

Their interrogation led to a raid at a house in Amritsar early on Tuesday morning and seizure of another 20 kg of heroin.

It was seized from a vehicle parked outside the locked house, the sources added.

DRI officials said the man and woman nabbed were in the their mid-30s, but refused to reveal their identities.

"The investigation into the case is progressing and searches are being conducted at several places in and around Delhi," an official said.

The Delhi police also seized around 22 kg of high-quality heroin from three Amritsar-based drug traffickers in North Delhi, besides busting a gang involved in smuggling of cocaine into the capital.

The three identified as Manjit Singh, Gurusevak Singh and Surjeet Singh, all of them in their early 30s, were arrested last Thursday from near Gurdwara Majnu Ka Tilla in North Delhi while they were waiting to deliver the contraband to somebody.

"We are also looking for one Jagjit Singh, a resident of Amritsar and suspected to be the main supplier of heroin," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Narcotics Branch) A S Cheema said in Delhi.

Cheema said Surjeet Singh was earlier involved in cases of drug trafficking and currency forging.

The trio had come from Punjab in a car to deliver the contraband in Delhi, he added.

According to anti-narcotics sleuths, high-quality Afghani heroin, meant for supply and smuggling to European countries, reaches Delhi from Punjab after entering the country through Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistan.

In another case, police arrested a drug peddler Mohammed Aslam in Ashok Vihar area in North-West Delhi with 13 grams of cocaine last week.

A gram of cocaine has a street value of Rs 3,500. On interrogation, Aslam told police that he got the drug from one Mohammad Naved, a resident of Mumbai, after which a police team was sent to the western metropolis and he was nabbed.

Police said Naved is the brother of notorious drug smuggler Guddu, who recently died. In a separate case, police seized 1.5 kg of brown sugar from two persons hailing from Uttar Pradesh and identified as Mohammed Wasim and Gulzar Ahmed.
