The Sri Lankan navy late on Friday night fired at an Indian fishing boat that was within Indian territorial waters near Katchatheevu, killing one fisherman and injuring three.

Gristaper, 33, a resident of Mandapam near Rameswaram, was killed on the spot and Sakayaraj, Rajan and Silva suffered serious bullet injuries.

However, one fisherman in the boat escaped without injuries, the police said, adding that the boat had not crossed the maritime borders when the firing occurred.

The injured fishermen were admitted to the Ramanathapuram government hospital.

Agitated fishermen of the Mandapam area blocked the road and halted the traffic for nearly one hour.

Police officials rushed to the spot and cleared the traffic.
