March 08, 2007 14:54 IST

Police on Thursday resorted to baton charge and lobbed tear gas shells to control a Dalit Congress workers' rally that turned violent on the outskirts this city.

The 'Dalit Akrosh Rally' heading towards the assembly hall turned violent when they were stopped near Indroda circle.

The workers started pelting stones at the police following which they used to water canons to disperse the mob. This was followed by lobbing of tear gas as the crowd refused to budge.

The police finally resorted to baton charge after the Congress workers continued to throw stones. A number of party MLAs, including party leader Bharatsinh Solanki, Opposition Leader Arjun Modhwadia and others were detained.

The rally was organised to highlight the grievances of the Dalit community.
