Jammu and Kashmir [Images] police on Friday claimed to have foiled a suicide attack by gunning down two Pakistani militants of Lashkar-e-Tayiba outfit in Srinagar [Images].

Abu Hafiz and Abu Tufail, both residents of Pakistan, were killed in an encounter at Gojbugh locality of Nowgam on the outskirts of Srinagar in the wee hours, Superintendent of Police (Srinagar, operations) Mohammad Irshad said.

However, another wanted militant Obaid alias Shahid fled in an injured condition during the encounter, he said.

Acting on specific information, police apprehended a hardcore militant Abu Faisal, he said adding, the ultra disclosed that a suicide squad has sneaked into Srinagar to carry out a sensational attack.

The SP said police swung into action and special nakabandis were laid. They encountered the militants at Gojbugh Nowgam where a gunbattle ensued in which both the militants were neutralised, while their other associate escaped, he said.

Two AK rifles and five grenades were recovered from their possession.

In another operation, troops of 21 Rashtriya Rifles nabbed two militants and an overground worker of LeT outfit from Handwara area of Kupwara district, a police spokesman said adding, some arms and ammunition were recovered from them.

Meanwhile, militants shot dead one Farooq Ahmad Sheikh in his house at Gadwad-Siver in Kupwara district on Friday morning.
