Holding that democracy is a "lot more established" in Pakistan than in some other countries, US President George W Bush said that United States wants to see free and fair elections in Pakistan.

Answering questions on the Travel Pool in Heilingendamm, Germany [Images], Bush said that the ideal situation would be to see all terrorists routed out of Pakistan.

"...Pakistan is an important ally in this war against these extremists. There are some in this country and I'm convinced that he (Musharraf) would like to rout them out but it's not easy territory. We've had some successes inside Pakistan, thanks to his leadership. And in terms of the democracy issues, he's going to have to deal with it," Bush said.

Bush was asked if thought democracy is the best way to confront radicals and terrorists and shouldn't the United States be pushing hard for democracy to really get established in Pakistan. He said, "I do (foresee free elections in Pakistan) and we do discuss democracy, as well as routing out foreigners in his (President Musharraf's) country who are an equal threat to America and to him."

"Democracy is a lot more established in Pakistan than in some of the other nations... And there are upcoming elections. What you're seeing is a lot of posturing about the election process, and it's not perfect. Neither was our democracy for hundreds of years when we enslaved people," Bush countered.

"We do push for democracy. We push in the context of the reality on the ground, as well."
