The Gujjar agitation spreads

June 4, 2007
Attacks and rioting have left at least 20 people dead in a week of clashes, which began in Rajasthan but have now spread to neighbouring states as a protest campaign by the Gujjar community to demand more government benefits has degenerated into bloodshed and lawlessness.

The Gujjars want to be included in a list of Scheduled Tribes whilst the powerful Meena community opposes the Gujjars' demand as it would mean more competition for them.
