The situation in Western Uttar Pradesh, scene of violent protests by Gurjars on Saturday, was peaceful on Sunday with no reports of any untoward incident from troubled areas.

Rail and road traffic operated normally even as police stepped up vigil in sensitive districts, Principal Secretary (Home) K Chandramauli told reporters here.

"The situation is under control and there is no report of any untoward incident," he said.

"We have received reports that Gurjars have decided to hold a Mahapanchyat in Meerut on June six. The District Administration has been asked to take necessary measures in this regard," Chandramauli said.

Patrolling had been intensified on highways and rail tracks and the situation was likely to be normal in a few days, he said.
