NDA candidate and former Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson Najma Heptulla on Monday filed her nomination papers for the August 10 Vice Presidential poll.

She submitted her documents in the presence of BJP top brass Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L K Advani, Rajnath Singh and NDA convenor George Fernandes [Images]. S S Dhindsa of Akali Dal and B J Panda of BJD were among other NDA leaders present.

Heptulla, who filed her nomination to Rajya Sabha Secretary-General Yogendra Narain, who is the Returning Officer, said she would appeal to the electorate to support her.

She filed her papers on the last day for filing nominations, just after UPA-Left candidate Mohammad Hamid Ansari joined the fray.

The contest will be triangular with the Third Front fielding former Union Minister Rashid Masood for the second highest office.
