16 nominations filed for VP poll

July 20, 2007 21:40 IST

With the filing of nomination for the Vice Presidential elections by United Nationalist Progressive Alliance candidate Rashid Masood, the total number of nominations so far filed stood at 16.

Two more nominations were filed today one each by Dr Guru Gyan Gandhi Harish Chandra Dua of Jahangir Puri, Delhi, who had twice earlier filed his nominations on July 10 and yesterday but both were rejected, as he did not supply the certified original copy of the electoral roll displaying his name in the list.

However, Dr Dua submitted a certified original copy of the electoral roll displaying his name and his nomination was accepted. His paper will now go for scrutiny.

The last nomination of the day was filed by Dr Chandhiravadhanan from Vellore, Tamil Nadu who did not submit the certified original copy of the electoral roll nor did he deposit the security money.

Hence, his nomination was rejected under section 5B(4) of the representation of Peoples Act.

Others who filed nominations on Thursday but which were rejected included Suresh Chandra Laljibhai of Ahmedabad, Gujarat and Prem Singh Saini from Hardwar, Uttarakhand.

The nominations of Mahesh Chandra Sharma of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Ram Krishan Mittal from Delhi and Bharatlal Mohanlal Bhatia from Mumbai were accepted for scrutiny.

Till date, neither UPA nor NDA have filed their candidates for the 13th Vice Presidential elections. The last date for filing of nominations is July 23.
