Haneef's detention extended by 2 days July 09, 2007 15:49 IST
The Australian police were on Monday granted extension till Wednesday of the custody of Indian doctor Mohammed Haneef, detained last week in connection with the botched UK car bombings. Australian Federal Police had lodged a fresh application before a Brisbane magistrate to extend the detention without charge and they have been given time to hold Haneef till 6 pm local time Wednesday, TV channels in Melbourne reported. The 27-year-old has been detained at a Brisbane watch-house since last Monday as authorities investigate whether he has any links to the failed attacks in London [Images] and at Glasgow airport, as well as to a national sleeper cell of foreign doctors established in Melbourne to fund overseas terrorist activities. He is being held under counter-terrorism laws that allow authorities to detain him without charge for periods approved by a judge. One such judicial order was due to expire on Monday. Just hours before the deadline, talking to ABC radio, Haneef's lawyer Peter Russo claimed that he was being treated unfairly and all the information on the case was not shared. Officers searched Haneef's apartment on the Gold Coast on Sunday for the second time.
