Thousands of people blocked the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh highway in Dibrugarh district on Wednesday.

They were protesting the killing of a youngster by the army.

Traffic from Joipur to Khonsa in Arunachal Pradesh came to a standstill after 10.30 am, when the people blocked the highway.

The army had claimed the youth named Moni Gogoi -- who was shot dead by the 44 Field Regiment on Monday -- was an ULFA activist involved in a bomb blast on November 28 at Natun Asomiya village that killed a soldier.

Ranjan Dhadumia, president of the Naharkatia unit of the All Assam Students Union, said the victim was a labourer and his elder brother Bijon Gogoi was a cadre of the banned group.

He demanded compensation of Rs 10 lakh and a government job for Moni's kin.

Bhaskar Sankar Rajkonwar, the president of the Naharkatia unit of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad, alleged that Moni was tortured by the army and demanded punishment for those involved.
