Expressing his joy over Tuesday's Supreme Court verdict, Bharatiya Janata Party's star leader Navjot Singh Sidhu said he always had the blessings of the people and his elders.

"I always had the blessings of people of India and my elders with me," Sidhu told PTI over the phone shortly after the apex court stayed his conviction in a road rage death case.

Known for his 'Sidhuisms, he said he had even taken the criticism of his political opponents in his stride, because I always have full faith in God'.

"I submitted to the majesty of the law and the Apex Court stayed my conviction and sentence," he said. "I was not feeling nervous before the verdict came. I have full faith in Almighty and the law of the land."

Asked if he would now be contesting the bypolls from Amritsar, the former BJP MP from Amritsar said, "My party president has already made himself clear on this."

Asked how his family, especially his wife, who was being speculated to be fielded from Amritsar in the event he was unable to contest, had taken the court verdict, he said, "They are elated and celebrating."

Meanwhile, the BJP workers led by many local leaders in Amritsar took to the streets on Tuesday and celebrated as soon as the news of Supreme Court pronouncement spread in the border city.

The workers burst crackers, distributed 'ladoos' and danced on the beats of drums shortly after the Court verdict.

Sidhu, a former international cricketer, was convicted for the death of 65-year-old Gurnam Singh in 1988 in Patiala.

There was jubiliation in the BJP camp in Punjab, with many leaders saying the Court verdict would bolster their campaign in the state, which goes to polls on February 13.

"It will give a big boost to our campaigning in Punjab. Sidhu, no doubt, is one of our star campaigners," Punjab BJP secretary, Anil Sareen said.

SAD, BJP's alliance partner, was also quick to welcome the court verdict.

"BJP is our ally and the court verdict will definitely further give a boost to both SAD-BJP workers," SAD secretary, Daljeet Singh Cheema said.

Laxmi Kanta Chawla, firebrand BJP leader and party's nominee from Amritsar Central to contest the forthcoming state assembly polls, while commenting on the court verdict, said, "Everybody is celebrating. It's a great news for the party. There is a new josh (vigour) among our workers."
