Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Wednesday welcomed the Supreme Court verdict upholding the right of Parliament to expel members for misconduct.

"I am very happy that the decision taken by the supreme legislative body of the country (Parliament) has been upheld by the Supreme Court," the speaker, who is in Kolkata, told PTI.

He said the verdict made it clear that corruption or improper behaviour, which is unbecoming of the position someone holds, would not be tolerated.

On the cash-for-query scam in which 10 Lok Sabha members and two from Rajya Sabha were expelled, he said the decision to expel them showed that such behaviour was not acceptable even to their parliamentary colleagues.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld Parliament's right to expel members for misconduct in the context of the cash-for-query scam of 2005.
