An armed Home Guard jawan allegedly shot dead his father-in-law and injured three other persons at Ranipur Rajputan village at midnight, police said on Wednesday.

Jawan Balbir Lal was accompanied by another person, whose identity is not yet known, at the time of the shooting.

Balbir Lal used his service rifle to shoot his father-in- law Modi Ram (57) at point blank range.

He also injured his wife Kanwaljit and two other relatives, including a child.

One of the the injured, Sunita, is in a critical condition.

Police registered a case against Lal under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act.

Phagwara's assistant superintenent of police Sukhchain Singh Gill visited the site with other offcials. Police found three spent shells from the spot.
