Fifty-nine years after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, one of his family members on Tuesday night alleged that there was a laxity in the security provided to him.

"Though the police were aware of the conspiracy to kill Gandhiji, there was no proper security at the prayer meeting held at Birla Hall, Delhi, where he was assassinated," his great grandson Tushar Gandhi said at a function to launch his latest book Let's Kill Gandhi.

"There was no co-ordination between the police forces of Delhi, Mumbai and Pune. Mumbai and Pune police were aware of the conspiracy to eliminate Gandhi, and if only police from Pune was posted for security, they would have identified Nathuram Godse and his accomplices when they were entering the prayer hall," he said.

Pune police officials were aware of the conspiracy hatched to assassinate the father of the nation and one deputy commissioner of police had informed his higher officials two days prior to the assassination about the conspiracy, he said.

He said the then deputy prime minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel should have taken adequate security measures for Gandhi as he would have been aware of the conspiracy.

Actor Kamal Hassan, releasing the book, said the book had exposed many myths on Gandhi's assassination.
