Actor Sanjay Dutt's counsel on Tuesday said he would seek the appointment of a probation officer to prepare a report before a special court here decides whether he should be released under the Probation of Offenders Act following his conviction in the 1993 serial blasts case.

Dutt's laywer V R Manohar said the TADA court would be requested to appoint a probation officer and go through his report before deciding on Dutt's plea for relief under the law.

Manohar submitted his final reply to the prosecution's opposition to Dutt's application under the Probation of Offenders Act.

Dutt has been convicted under the Arms Act for illegal possession of a AK-56 rifle and 9 mm pistol and faces a jail term of five to 10 years.

He was acquitted of conspiracy charges under the anti-terror law TADA and is currently on bail.
