A top leader of the 28th battalion of United Liberation Front of Assam's strike force and his female associate surrendered before the Army on Friday in Upper Assam's Tinsukia district.

Disillusioned with the insurgent outfit's sovereignty demand for Assam, ULFA leader, Jagat Barua alias Ashim Barua (28), and his associate Kabita Barua surrendered before the 7/11 Gorkha Regiment located at Kakopathar in the district. The two, however, deposited no weapons, defence sources said.

Jagat had joined the militant organisation in 1999 and was involved in several extremist operations in Upper Assam, besides receiving training as a paramedic.

The close associate of 28th battalion leader Ujjal Gohain said his dream of an independent Assam was shattered as its fulfillment was not a viable option
