Touts in Punjab are buying voter identification cards for less than Rs 1000, a sting operation by Star News television channel has shown.

It claimed that candidates are buying the ID cards from poor voters who they fear may vote against them.

Hidden cameras captured images of agents in three Assembly segments -- Ferozepur, Jalalabad and Gurusahai -- who allegedly worked for politicians.

The channel claimed to have trapped one such agent, known only as Iqbal and procured for it three voter ID cards for Rs 3,000.

According to the release, the Election Commission has taken cognisance of the news report and promised a thorough investigation into the revelations.
