Senior Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and Rajya Sabha member Motiur Rehman died of a heart attack at his residence in Motihar in Bihar's East Champaran district on Tuesday, family sources said. He was 58.

Rehman, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2005, is survived by his wife, four daughters, and two sons.

He was also national general secretary and spokesman of the party.

RJD president and railway minister Lalu Prasad and his wife and Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly Rabri Devi have condoled the untimely demise of Rehman.

"It is a big political and personal loss for us. Rehman was a leader totally dedicated to the uplift of the depressed and downtrodden sections of the society," they said in a condolence message.

Lalu will attend the burial of the departed leader on Tuesday evening.
