A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) trooper killed himself with his service rifle inside a CRPF camp at Hariganwan, 40 km from Srinagar [Images] in north Kashmir Ganderbal district on Friday.

A senior police officer said the CRPF soldier identified as Rajesh Kumar of 158 battalion, shot himself with his service weapon and took his life.

Incidents of fragging and suicide among the army and paramilitary troopers in the state have been worrying senior officers of the security forces during the last few years.

Director General of CRPF, who visited the valley last month, admitted that there had been an increase in the number of suicides among the paramilitary troopers engaged in counter-insurgency duties in Jammu and Kashmir [Images].

He, however, said an elaborate programme named  'Sanjivani' had been drawn up to take care of the levels of stress among troopers that includes counselling for the family members and the soldiers.

Senior security force officers have also worked out elaborate plans, including regular leaves, better contact between soldiers and their commanding officers and better recreational avenues as some measures to address these problems.
