At least eight criminals were killed in a police encounter in Bihar's Khagaria district on Friday morning. The police have recovered seven bodies.

Police sources said the eight were wanted in several criminal cases, including murder, extortion and kidnapping in Bihar. Besides, they illegally occupied hundreds of acres of land in Dhamra Diara areas.

Khagaria Superintendent of Police Vineet Vinayak told rediff.com over telephone: "When the police tracked their movement and asked them to surrender, they opened fire and in the subsequent encounter eight criminals were killed."

Vinayak said the operation was a big boost for the police in the Koshi Diara areas of Khagaria and neighbouring districts.
