The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Centre on a petition by sacked All India Institute of Medical Science chief P Venugopal, challenging the controversial law fixing 65 years as the superannuation age for the post of  the institute's director.

In the meantime, K K Dogra, who has taken over as the chief of AIIMS, will continue as the acting director till further orders, the apex court said.

The court expressed concern that a distinguished person like Venugopal had to face such a situation.

"On the facts of the case, we are with Venugopal," it said.
