Two Bihar policemen were dismissed from the service for flogging a chain snatcher.

The incident created a countrywide hue and cry.

Mohammad Aurangzeb alias Saleem, a youth with a criminal record in Nathnagar town in Bhagalpur district, was first severely beaten up by a mob on Monday after he was caught trying to snatch a woman's gold chain.

After that, he was tied to a motorcycle and dragged along the road by two the policeman.

DIG (Eastern range) Girjanand Sharma confirmed that the two policemen -- Ramchandra Rai and L B Singh -- were dismissed. "They were dismissed for violation of human rights," Sharma said.

The government had suspended the two policemen and issued a show cause notice to them two days ago.

The National Human Rights Commission on Tuesday issued a notice to the Bihar police, asking it for a report on the incident.
