The Punjab police have charged former President Giani Zail Singh's daughter with medical negligence.

The case comes after a 26-year-old woman, on whom Dr Gurdeep Kaur performed a surgery at her private clinic, died.

"We have registered a case of medical negligence against Dr Gurdeep Kaur on the complaint of the woman's husband Babloo Yadav," Station House Officer of Sector 17 police station, Kulwant Singh said.

The surgery on Poonam was conducted on Monday for the removal of an eight-week old foetus.

Yadav in his complaint alleged that soon after the surgery his wife's condition started deteriorating and she was referred to a government hospital where the doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Kaur, however, maintained that Poonam died due to cardiac arrest and ruled out any negligence on her part.

She said that the couple had given their consent for the surgery.

The police said they were awaiting the post-mortem report of the deceased and would act only after the cause of her death becomes clear.
