August 07, 2007 11:58 IST
Two Kanwarias were run over by a speeding truck near Manesar on Tuesday, leading to protests from hundreds, who blocked the Delhi-Jaipur highway and set seven vehicles on fire, including those belonging to the police.
Kanwarias are devotees who take water from the River Ganga and take it back to their hometowns to consecrate their idols in the holy month of Shravan.
The deceased were identified as Krishna Kumar and Lilu, both residents of Bhagola in Rajasthan, police said.
The truck driver fled the spot, after which the Kanwarias blocked traffic on NH 8, police said.
The agitated Kanwarias, who were joined by villagers of Manesar, set afire seven vehicles including the car of DCP headquarters, Gurgaon, and two Haryana roadways buses.
They also torched the truck which hit the victims, police said.
The blockade has led to a massive traffic jam on the route with vehicles lined up for nearly 25 km.
