Polls in PM's Rajya Sabha seat on May 24

Election to the Rajya Sabha seat from Assam represented by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be held on May 24.

Notification for the election for the seat will be issued on May 7 and the poll process will be completed by May 28, the Election Commission announced on Monday.

Dr Singh's term in Rajya Sabha is due to expire on June 14.

The last date of filing of nominations is May 14 and the papers will be scrutinised the next day. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is May 17. Counting of votes will take place on May 24, after the polling is over.

Election for another Rajya Sabha seat from the state represented by Indramoni Bora will also take place on May 24 under the same schedule.

Byelection for a Rajya Sabha seat from West Bengal, that fell vacant due to the death of Communist Party-Marxist leader Chittabrata Majumdar, will also be held along with the biennial elections.

The remaining term of the seat is upto August 18, 2011.
