The Muslim vote

April 25, 2007
After the Dalits and the Brahmins, the most influential section of the society are the Muslims. Mayawati has got that area covered carefully. She has, as we noted on Tuesday, given 61 seats to Muslim candidates.

Irshad Hussain a former district secretary of the BSP, has been in the party for 11 years. "There was a lot of goondagiri during the Samajwadi Party rule. This does not happen in Behenji's (Mayawati) rule. Even among the Yadavs, the good people suffer. Only supporters of the Samajwadi Party prosper. They get all the jobs, government tenders and indulge in land grabbing," he alleged.

As a backlash of this behaviour, he feels, the people will vote for the BSP. Ekta Shyamun Haq, another BSP member who is in charge of a constituency in Moradabad, is confident that Mayawati will complete a full term this time. "The only reason Mayawati could not complete her term was because she never listened to the BJP," he said.
