Mizoram: CRPF jawan jailed for molesting girl
April 12, 2007 14:05 IST
A Central Reserve Police Force jawan was remanded to Kolasib district jail on Wednesday after he allegedly molested a girl in Bairabi in the Kolasib district of Mizoram.
The alleged molestation sparked off a clash between local people and the CRPF men, leaving a CRPF trooper and a few civilians injured. A bus and two other cars, which were meant for transporting the patrolling security men from Assam, were also badly damaged.
Kolasib additional SP Lalremmuana told UNI on Tuesday night that though the situation was tense, it was under control. He said the residents of the area had taken out a protest rally.
Sources said that the incident took place on Tuesday when one of the jawans went to a nearby restaurant and asked for a glass of water.
When a waitress came to give him with the water he molested her taking advantage of the situation. The girl later informed the police.
As the news spread and the police arrested the accused, identified as Eknathan, locals started pelting stones at the other CRPF jawans waiting nearby.
Enraged, the security personnel also threatened the crowd by loading their guns. A CRPF trooper, who was hit by a stone, fell unconscious while a few civilians were also injured in the melee.
