Nine children, aged between eight and 18, were drowned in the Yamuna river on Tuesday afternoon. They were  attempting to save one amongst them who accidently fell into the river while playing on its bank.

While the bodies of nine children were fished out, efforts were on to trace the remaining two, police sources said.

They said the children, who were playing football on the bank of the river, drowned as they tried to save a young child who had fallen in the river.

The children had come to Baraithi village in Uttar Pradesh to attend the engagement ceremony of a relative, the sources said.
