Swaminathan nominated to Rajya Sabha

Father of India's first green revolution and noted agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament.

Swaminathan, 81, till recently the Chairman of the National Commission on Farmers, was credited with engineering the first green revolution to make the country self-sufficient in foodgrain production.

The agriculture scientist also headed the International Rice Research Institute at Manila.

He has set up the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation in Chennai with focus on strengthening information communication system in villages.

He is a recipient of several national and international awards.
