One person was killed and 15 injured in a bomb blast carried out by suspected United Liberation Front of Assam militants in Kumarpara in Guwahati on Sunday minutes after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived in the city on a two-day visit.
The blast occurred near a busy railway level crossing in Kumarpara, police sources said.
The bomb was hidden in a motorcycle in the busy area and exploded at about 1745 hours. One person died on way to the hospital while 14 others were seriously injured.
The site of the blast was not on the route scheduled to be taken by the prime minister on his way to the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Amingaon to lay the foundation stone for the city's second bridge over the Brahmaputra.
The prime minister is in the city to lay the foundation for a second bridge over the Brahmaputra river. Even though the blast was also not on his route to the Raj Bhawan where would halt overnight, it exposed the loopholes in the security arrangement.
The entire area has been sealed off and combing operations are being carried out by security forces.
