The SABANY awards were presented at a special black-tie dinner to celebrate the organisation's tenth anniversary at the W Hotel, New York.

Dr Singh's daughter fights her own war

Singh, 36 -- Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's [Images] youngest daughter -- keeps a low profile in the Indian community and refuses to speak to the media about her work or her famous father.

The attorney, who represents the American Civil Liberties Union, was honoured with the Access to Justice Leadership Award from SABANY for her work as a counsel in the ACLU vs Department of Defence case, a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed to seek records relating to the torture of detainees held in US custody abroad.

She was also recognised for her work in the Ali vs Rumsfeld case, which was filed against US Defence Secretary Rumsfeld on behalf of Iraqi and Afghan detainees who were tortured in American custody.

Several high-profile South Asian lawyers and businessmen attended the September 23 event. India's Ambassador [Images] to the US Ronen Sen presided.
