Time to dump Section 377? Tell us!

September 21, 2006

For the first time, leading Indian personalities have come out in defence of the country's homosexual community.

150 petitioners -- from writers Vikram Seth and Arundhati Roy to Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen -- have urged the government to overturn Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code that condemns homosexuality as a crime.

Framed during British rule, the law carries a punishment of up to 10 years imprisonment for engaging in homosexuality.

There are an estimated 50 million homosexuals in India whose human rights have been marginalised because of Section 377 and society's disapproval.

Do you think it is time India got rid of this law and stopped treating homosexuals as outcastes in Indian society?

Isn't it time that we accepted gays as equals in our society?

Tell us.
