Can Pakistan be trusted in the fight against terror?

September 18, 2006

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh took everyone by surprise when he announced, in Havana, the setting-up of an India-Pakistan anti-terror mechanism.

Details about its composition and functioning are sketchy, but from the reactions it's clear that doubts persist about Pakistan's ability to combat terror aimed at India.

The doubts are not baseless. For years India has charged Pakistan with not doing enough to halt the export of terror into its territory, of harbouring criminals and terrorists it holds responsible for acts of violence in India.

Is India being too optimistic in expecting Pakistan's cooperation in its fight against terror? Will the joint anti-terror mechanism prove effective? Tell us!
