September 14, 2006 16:21 IST
A key official of the Bank of Russia was fatally shot by unknown assailants in Moscow late last night.

First Deputy Chairman of the board of governors of the Bank of Russia (Central Bank) Andrei Kozlov was fired at by two unidentified gunmen in the parking lot of a sports complex.

His driver died on the spot, while Kozlov was rushed to hospital in critical condition with bullet wounds in chest and abdomen. He succumbed to injuries Wednesday morning, Radio Mayak reported.

Police have not ruled out a "professional" motive behind the killing of Kozlov, who over the past years had revoked the licenses of about 40 Russian banks for money laundering and other illegal activities.

The Moscow Prosecutor has registered a criminal case.
