Hardening its stance against the Telangana Rashtriya Samiti, Congress on Wednesday declared it would contest the Karimnagar Lok Sabha seat if a by-election were held.

All India Congress Committee general secretary Digvijay Singh said, "As of today this is our position."

At the same time, he also wanted Andhra Congress leaders, including Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Kesava Rao, Sports Minister Satyanarayana Rao to show restraint.

"We are not concerned about KCR Rao or TRS. We are concerned about the people of Telangana," he said.

His comments came a day after Rao announced his resignation from Karimnagar Lok Sabha seat to intensify the movement for separate Telangana state and dared the ruling Congress leaders from the region to follow the suit and seek fresh mandate.

Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi on Tuesday appealed to Rao to reconsider his decision.
