Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief Vaiko alleged that the Sri Lankan Navy on Thursday morning "fired" at fishermen from Rameswaram near Kachatheevu islands in the Palk Bay.

In a telegram to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images], he said the incident has created "unwanted fear" among the fishing community and nearly 3,000 fishermen were affected by it as they were unable to venture into the sea.

"These attacks are regular, wanton and willful. I request you to kindly intervene and save Tamil fishermen's lives," he told Dr Singh.
