Amid the failure of talks between the Nepal government and Maoists, India's Ambassador to Kathmandu Shiv Shankar Mukherjee arrived in New Delhi to apprise the Indian leadership about the latest developments in the Himalayan country.

Mukherjee met Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon in Delhi on Monday and briefed him about the present situation in Nepal, official sources said.

He will meet Home Minister Shivraj Patil and National Security Adviser M K Narayanan on Tuesday.

The visit comes in the backdrop of failure of parleys between the Maoist rebels and the ruling Seven-Party Alliance in Nepal on key issues including arms management and the position of the king.

The talks have been indefinitely put off.

The Maoist leadership has objection to Nepal signing an extradition treaty with India and had reportedly pressurised Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala to cancel Nepal Home Minister Krishna Prasad Situola's visit to New Delhi early this month pending the talks between the Maoists and the government.

Sitoula was to have signed a new treaty replacing the 50-year-old pact and inked a mutual legal assistance agreement aimed at facilitating the legal aspects of implementing the extradition treaty.

Maoists have also been insisting that the Nepal government take up with New Delhi the release of their cadres in India.
