The man who financed 5.3 million poor people

October 13, 2006
Mohammad Yunus found himself at the centre of a spontaneous street celebration in Dhaka on Friday as Bangladeshis celebrated his Nobel Peace Prize.

Crowds gathered near the headquarters of his Grameen Bank and eyewitnesses said it took some 30 minutes for the 66-year-old Yunus to make his way to the bank after he had received the call from Oslo telling him the news.

Yunus said he was at home when he took the call and said he was completely surprised.

"The prize will help me to continue the fight against poverty," the 66-year-old told Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

Asked whether he might not have instead been named the recipient of the Nobel economics prize, Yunus said, "peace and economy are linked together. If there is poverty there can be no peace."
