Winners & losers: Satveer Chaudhary

November 08
Minnesota State Senator Satveer Chaudhary, a Democrat who represents Fridley, has retained his seat in District 50, earning 64 per cent of the votes.

In 1996 Chaudhary, then 37, an attorney and small businessman, became the first Asian-American to be elected to the Minnesota legislature.

Four year later, he became the state's first Asian-American Senator and the then-youngest state Senator, and the highest ranking Asian-American official in the nation. This election marks his tenth anniversary as a legislator, and is the first time he has broken the 60 per cent winning margin.

"It is an honour and a privilege to be re-elected by the people I've worked so hard to serve. Our state stands on a threshold. The next several years will determine the legacy we leave to our children and the quality of life we provide for our parents and grandparents," he said.
